Hi Jon, thanks for taking time out to speak to us. Where are you in the World right now?
I’m in Ibiza at an internet cafe, checking my emails, having a look at my new website www.jonathanulysses.com, and checking out some new tee shirts from my Ulybug clothing label, which you’ll be hearing about very soon!
You played at the both the openings of Space and We Love - also at Space – earlier this month.
How did it go?
Both parties went very well. At the Space opening party there was around 16,000 people in and six different DJs. I played the sunset terrace and rocked the crowd with new Ibiza hits of ’08 and I stayed until around 5am. We Love was another great party to open up the season where I played from 7.30pm until 9.00pm, again on the sunset terrace, and the club was jumping with magical clubbers raring up for the summer.
You’re coming back from Ibiza to headline Hat-Club at seOne on 28th June. Are you pleased to be back on home soil for a bit?
Yes, it will be nice to be back on UK soil. I really enjoy playing at Hat Club, especially at seOne as I had my birthday party at their event back in February – I hung around till the cleaners kicked us out...wicked party!!
This year marks your 10th year at Space in Ibiza, which is quite an achievement! What’s been the secret to your success?
I think that the secret is a bit of luck, a lot of good music, having an individual style, and being prepared to make big sacrifices. I love working at the club and make a point of getting along with everyone.
How do you plan to mark your anniversary?
As I always have done - by getting behind the decks on the terrace and smashing the granny out of it!
You’ve also been busy putting together some of the season’s hottest Ibiza compilations. What’s going on there then?
I have recently mixed and compiled a compilation for In Bed With Space; it’s the 10th edition and will be released through Club Star, and will be available in UK on 23rd June. For more details check www.clubstar.net My second compilation is available exclusively to download through i-tunes and is called Ibiza Opening Party 2008 – it’s out now! From the opening parties alone, what’s your ‘Ibiza tune of the year’ prediction?
My biggest prediction would be my own track I made with and Juan Kidd called ‘Panick Attack’, which is getting a release on Jay Funk Records.
Sounds great! We heard another of your new tracks ‘Be Free’, and it’s quite a stomper.
Yes, this track a real stomper - I made it with a guy called Peter Brown from the French scene. The feel of the track was a bumping, up-tempo, rolling track with simple vocals and a definite French club sound.
Tell us one of your all time favourite ‘moments’ from over the years at the club?
One of my all time favourite moments at Space was watching Skin sing live with Jocelyn Brown. It was all unrehearsed. I remember Jay Kay from Jamiroquai dancing on the speakers and being told to get down by Pepe the owner.
How has Ibiza changed since you’ve been DJing there?
Ibiza has changed in many ways, with the whole download revolution, the internet, even mobile phones - the communication highway has really changed the way that DJ’s play their music and what equipment they use. Equipment from the likes of Pioneer have revolutionized the way that DJ’s play with CD’s, MP3s, and WAVs, and when I started in Ibiza none of this stuff was around.
How do you think the stricter new opening/closing time laws are going to effect things on the island?
There is a lot of negative press over the new opening hours, but everything has to change and it may end up being a good thing and find people making more time to discover the other side of Ibiza
What else do you get up to on the island other than DJing?
When I’m not DJing in Ibiza, I like to enjoy the island. I own a property in San Jose so I like to chill there with friends and have BBQ’s. I enjoy going to Sa Trinxa on Salinas to hear Jon Sa Trinxa play. I enjoy eating out in Ibiza Town and watching sunsets at Kuhmaras, Mambo’s and Café Del Mar.
What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen in a club?
The strangest thing I’ve seen in a club was a 95 year old man playing with a 19 year old Moroccan kid’s private parts, whilst an 80 year woman was nibbling the old man’s ear. They had a little pink poodle that kept messing on the floor – and that happened in Space many, many years ago!
Tell us an Ibiza secret?
An Ibiza secret is, with a little bit of savvy you can get in a lot of the big clubs for free – dress up like a cleaner, befriend a worker, carry the DJ’s record box where there’s a will, there’s a way!
Catch Jonathan holding the reigns at Hat-Club on 28th June at seOne. This is not to be missed!
