This article is about SICK! ON THE DANCEFLOOR present PURRFECT ELECTRO @ seOne in London (UK), Sat 02 Feb

Interview with New Sick! Resident Ed kane / Kanio

On February 2nd, Sick! On the Dancefloor returns to it's home @ Seone, with the first party of 2008! A monster line up that headlines Leeds' finest; Purrfect Electro. Expect this to be another roadblock and Sick! continue to become the most talked about event in London.

Sick! has gone from strength to strength over the past 8 months. Each time it has been full to capacity, churning out hard hitting electro and dirty bass-driven house which is simply unrivalled anywhere. It has been one of the most successful parties at Seone club since the Moondance days of the 90s.

This month, as a special surprise, the 2 most devastating forces of the NORTH & SOUTH combine in the mainroom to provide a night of debaucherous FILTH!

Joining Sick! On the Dancefloor and causing his usual mayhem will be New Sick! resident and beatport favourite , Ed Kane who will be playing in the main room and in the second room under his tech guise, Kanio. We caught up with him to talk remixes, Richie Hawtin and Jimmy's cafe......

Where and when did you get your first taste of house music and who were your early musical heroes?

Well I’ve been going out Ibiza since well before I was even old enough to get into any of the clubs, so probably since then really.
My taste in music has changed a lot over the years so it’s hard to mention all the artists who have influenced me. I was heavily into Hip-Hop and Drum and bass when I was younger, although my biggest hero is probably Leo Sayer.

What was your first ever professional gig and what was the last night you played at?

My first professional gig was in Chertsy town hall at my nan’s 90th, proper smashed it. I got a tenner.

What gave you the impetus to finally turn your back on ordinary employment and turn your hand at being a full time DJ and producer?

Probably when my crack habit took hold.

How did your life change from that moment onward and did you have any help managing your career trajectory, which has gone on a steep upward curve ever since?

Well after I had kicked the crack, I suddenly realised I was a Dj, it was great.

You’ve been fast and effective at harnessing the power of the Internet as a promotional tool; do you think it’s possible to make a name without it these days?

Not unless you’re a dab hand with a fax machine.

I am a die-hard vinyl addict, though I appreciate times must change and life will go on with CD's, Ableton etc. What’s your take on all of this; will vinyl ever finally die out or do you think there’ll always be a place for it in clubland?

Yes for old men with beards. Technology should be embraced, and used to you’re your advantage. Just look how people like Richie Hawtin have used it not only to become massively successful, but also to push dance music forward.

You’ve got your home-base in London. What do you think of the London scene and the Uk dance scene at the moment?

Yeah Electro has Kind of had its day to a certain extent in London now, its all about minimal techno these days. I for one am a big fan. Also the crowd in London is really open and up for new sounds and records, which is great for a DJ, but quite tough when u first start playing out of town.

One of your key collaborators in the production studio is Will Bailey. How did that partnership evolve?

Basically there is a café near my gaff called Jimmy’s. Basically Will comes down for one of Jimmy’s Jumbo breakfasts (with chips) quite regularly, so we usually make a tune after.

Right now I’m listening to one of your latest remixes, Electro is Dead, this remix meet the heady heights of the Beatport top 10. What does it feel like to know lots of people are buying your music?

Oh yeah that’s one of my Minimal tunes under my ‘Kanio’ alias. Knowing people are buying your music is great, it makes me happy.

What other remixes and tracks have planned to destroy Beatport top 10 again?

Filth and Splendor – Language (Ed Kane’s Cheap Wonk Remix) (Mass Recordings)
Ils – Broken Homes (Ed Kane’s Better Days Remix) (Botchit + Scarper)
Prok+Fitch - The Chant (Ed Kane's Dirtbag Mix) (Stealth)
Are all coming out over the next few months, along with a few more ‘Kanio’ techno beasts.

For the benefit of any techno-boffins that might be reading this site, what studio equipment do you use?

I use a logic on a mac and a load of clever plug ins, but as a sound engineer, I can tell you it’s not about what you use so much, but how you use it.

How do you describe the music you come up with in the studio, does it fit into a particular genre?

My Ed Kane stuff is electro, but its gone a bit more nu school jackin’ recently, whilst my Kanio stuff is minimal techno.

Which has been your favourite remix out of the tracks you’ve done so far?

Prok + Fitch – The Chant (Ed Kane’s Dirtbag Mix)
Noir – Superskunk (Ed Kane’s Pulling a Whitey mix)

Do you have any UK residencies that people can catch you at?
Sick on the dancfloor at SE1 (London)
And If @ Bushwackers (Birmingham)

Tell me a bit about you new guise Kanio if you please?

Kanio is my Minimal techno Alter Ego and its pronounced Can – ee – oh!
I only started in june, but iv had 7 tracks out, all of which have done surprisingly well.

Which other DJs do you really admire, be they old hands or rising stars?

Richie Hawtin is God.

Have you got one night in particular that really stands out for you? (I mean whilst DJing, not the first time you had sex!).

The first time I played the main room at the cross was a pretty special gig, also I played for 3.5 hours over in Russia the other day, awesome!!

Everybody loves the sunshine; what about you, what do you love (apart from the sunshine!)?

Other than music my big love is Tits.

What is your top tune of the moment?

Ed Kane: Aston shuffle - For everyone (Stupid Fresh Mix) –
Kanio: Red Robin – Tin soldier

What would be your five desert island discs and would you bother to take a book as well?

Id take just take a porno.
